It’s the world’s first ‘exponential barbershop ruler’ and while it may not be as big a deal as the invention of the pencil, we're incredibly proud of it. Our team noticed that a series of exponential curves could be devised so as to continuously and regularly grow apart. On a graph of such curves, there will always eventually be a transverse where each line is 1 cm away from the next. Then later on, they’ll eventually all be one INCH apart. And so on! In this way, every possible unit of distance can exist on a single ruler.

Even ad hoc units you may need when least expected (e.g. “how many of these paper-flowers-I-made is this sheet of construction paper long?”). Really big units (like light years) can only be partially represented, of course, but by placing the curves on a cylinder just right, we managed to make the whole device continuous.

THE STORY

THE KEY TO ULTIMATE MEASUREMENT

No, we didn’t call it the Ruler of the Universe because it will literally install you as the emperor of known space. Though it is technically possible that somewhere out there is a world that worships innovative measuring devices, so we guess there’s still a chance for that.

The name is really a play on the idea of a “universal ruler,” because what makes this device unique is that it allows you to make a measuring unit out of almost anything smaller than itself. That’s right, it doesn't just measure in a variety of common and uncommon units—it lets you create your own! Want to measure in popcorn kernels? You can. Or you can create a unit from a penny, a seashell, or your own pinky; the possibilities are (nearly) endless. This ruler is an entirely in-house project, invented, designed, and engineered by members of our Curiosity Box team. So far as we know there’s nothing like it.
